Sometimes you have no choice but to ride in the rain. Yes, it sucks.
If you get caught in the rain, you want to stay dry. This is how you do it.
We've been riding for many years and we still don't like to ride in the rain. However, it is inevitable that you will get caught in the rain at some point and for this reason, we always carry rain gear on the Spyder. Our rain gear of choice is the Nelson-Rigg Stormrider SR-6000 Rain Suit in the hi-vis yellow color. We chose this color because we wanted extra visibility in bad weather, but you can choose between yellow, hi-vis yellow, red or black.
We prefer two piece rain suits over 1 piece because, in our opinion, they are easier to put on. When rain is imminent, we pull over and don the rain gear. First, we put on the pants then the boot covers. The boot covers go inside the zippered pants leg so water won't run down into them. Next, we put on the jackets and securely fasten them up, all the way up to the collar. We don't like jackets with hoods as they won't fit inside a helmet plus they block your side vision. The collars on these suits are snug enough that water doesn't get in. Your head and helmet covers your neck so that helps as well. Even in downpours, we stay nice and dry except for our hands.
If it looks like it will rain for a while, we will stop under an overpass or pull into somewhere with a cover and wait it out. Of course, if we are in a hurry, we keep riding. After the rain has ended, removing the gear is the opposite sequence of putting it on. We roll it up and store it in the saddlebags. Don't forget to take it out and let it hang to dry when you reach your destination. If you don't, you'll get mold growing on it.
We're very pleased with the Stormrider rain suits and we do our best not to use them! But they sure are great to have when that unsuspecting thunder storm pops up and rains on our parade. If you don't already have a rain suit, click one of the links above and grab you a set.
